If the name doesn’t grab you, then the designs certainly will. If the mission of a graphic tee is expression and meaning…then mission accomplished. Blood is the New Black is a graphic tee design company with a focus on art and culture. Each design is an original work of art from an up and coming illustrator, designer, artist, or photographer. Created by founder Mitra Khayyam, BITNB was established in 2004 from a concept written years earlier in a college thesis. – “I always wanted to be an artist but realized early that I didn’t have the skill, so I decided to focus on the business end of design instead of the creative”.
At first glance some of the designs from BITNB will throw you because you’re not used to seeing this kind of stuff on clothing. But here’s what you have to keep in mind; this is art. In its purest form. Straight from the artists brain to a sheet of…cotton! They sent me 2 shirts to review, and this is truly riveting imagery.
The 1st is a concept blending history, politics, and old school monstrosities! Yeah, you heard me right…the design features the heads of 4 of the most renowned scary movie monsters ever created! Who? You guessed it, Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein and a traditional Skeleton head! And guess what they represent! Our founding fathers! Sitting atop of Mt Rushmore looking as ghoulish and menacing as ever! The colors are vibrant yet simple and dark at the same time, using dark teal outlines and red highlights in eyes and mouths. This would have been a great statement for the Halloween season!
The second shirt is one for the true traditional art lover. The shirt shows the deterioration of a man over the course of 6 phases. Traditional art lovers will appreciate the use of a combination of simple shapes to create each image. Each slide more distorted than the next, we get to experience some really gripping imagery as what was once a man becomes more like putty on the floor.
The texture and makeup of the shirt should add some desirability to the picky customer as well. The cotton is incredibly soft and the thin neckline and tagless name print on the inside should make for an exceptionally comfortable fit.
