TEES - The Art of the T-Shirt

TEES: The Art of the T-Shirt, by MAKI and published by Laurence King in October 2009 shows the work of 80 of the most creative t-shirt designers from around the world. This book celebrates the T-shirt. It is a showcase of contemporary T-shirt designs organised by designer. As well as showing the artwork, the book reveals something about the designers behind them. How do they work? Why are T-shirts such an interesting medium to work on? Would they wear their own T-shirt?

MAKI point out that every graphic designer or illustrator designs a T-shirt at a certain point in their career and this is why there are such a huge variety of designs both in the book and on the market. TEES is crammed with a myriad of styles, techniques and flavours. The packed pages of the book reflect what is going on online in T-shirt land today. New T-shirt stores pop up daily on the Internet and while it is impossible for them all to survive, it does make the area an exciting and ever changing one. Even if many of these internet stores bomb within a year their T-shirt designs remain. Internet stores have the flexibility to create new T-shirts every day and sell them online immediately, while regular shops usually depend on seasonal collections. This is part of what makes it such an exciting territory.

A special limited edition will also be available. It includes a T-shirt featuring a unique collage of designs provided by artists in the book, and cost £30.
