Bon Iver, Devendra Banhart, Hayden, The Shins, Wolfmother. What have they all got in common?
They are all amazing artists. Correct. They are really really nice people. Correct. They are all on the most played list on my ipod. Correct – how did you know that? They have also all designed t-shirts for The Yellow Bird Project. This is a Montreal based nonprofit organisation who work with an incredible range of indie rock musos to create kick ass t-shirts, with the profits going to the artists chosen charities.
It was started in 2006 by two uni grads with no real connections to the music world. They just had the belief that musicians would appreciate their vision and want to contribute. They were right. They describe themselves as “a tree of creativity, with branches joining together indie musicians, charitable organizations, and t-shirts with a fashionable punch.” They seek out the coolest of artists and collaborate with them to design awesomely awesome tee-shirts, and give all the prettiest of pretty profits to charities of the artists’ choice.
Devendra Banhart’s T-shirt

Devendra Banhart the eccentric, brilliant leading light of “freak-folk” believed in the Yellow Bird Project before anyone else did. He was the first person to give a design which helped give YBP some street cred. He designed his t-shirt exclusively for the Yellow Bird Project, to benefit “Teenage Cancer Trust”. His t-shirt is very cool, and if you haven’t heard it, have a listen to his latest album “Smokey Roles Down Thunder Canyon”.
Since then the list has grown and includes indie superstars like Au Revoir Simone, Hayden, Riley Kiley, The National and most recently Bon Iver. The have also just launched a coloring book so you can get lost in the Broken Social Scene maze, or color in Bon Iver’s water supply. As Russell Lissack of Bloc Party so perfectly put it “I like coloring books. I also like charity. So as you can imagine, I definitely like this!”
